September 2026 Wrapup
A wrapup of our current work in September and FluxFur transparency reports
What a September, right? From a hack to a move to everything in between, here's where we are starting a brand new month.
Improvements
- We've migrated our two production stacks into a brand new Datacenter, ROK1. SEC1 will be retired while RIC1 is reconditioned into a purely offsite backup location for disaster recovery. This is part of our promise listed out on the September 5th Outage Report.
- We have beefed up our security by removing almost every attack surface from public view. The only thing remaining is external SSH which is required for some operations, but the vast majority that don't require it will either be disabled entirely or will be severely restricted by way of VPN access or by Zero-Trust Gateway.
- Customer Portal has gotten a big upgrade in the way of VM access directly from the portal, IP assignments and Infrastructure views, DNS management, and billing directly from that view.
- We'll soon be opening for VM rentals for some of our communities. However, we have a few things to figure out first like bandwidth management and resource allocations.
- Our current services: FastAsset, Hypna, Constellation, Fluxler and Konbini got some very worthwhile updates in their own right. We'll be working on reworking our service lineup soon.
- We're working with the FluxFur team to get their new systems setup in our Datacenter Stack. This includes their new Networking Services and their new internal nets.
- We've facelifted our status page! https://status.jouleworks.net/
FluxFur Donation
FluxFur has donated to Jouleworks $2,649.38 for the month of September. We are extremely grateful to the community for supporting FluxFur and by extension Jouleworks, and as usual we'd like to let you all know what we are planning for this month with the donations.
Infrastructure Redundancy
We're continuing from August to invest in additional cold spare equipment and drives. So far we are nearing our 35% on-deck target (Having roughly 35% of spare parts on-hand and available to replace any equipment failure) and will re-asses once we hit that.
Colocation Costs
A fair chunk of change this month goes to overall colocation costs. With moving to a new datacenter in such short order, we have a few contracts with the SEC1 datacenter to close out in January that we have to continue paying until then. We also have a new bill in the form of this colocation to pay for as well.
Network Speed Improvements
Discussing with our other stakeholders in this colocation, we're increasing our network speeds 2x to accomodate more traffic capacity. This will also help with getting Customer VM rentals off the ground.
New Node
With the move to this new Datacenter, we found that one of our nodes was physically too big for the rack, so we had to spend a fair amount of money buying a new node to replace that node that was sitting oblong in the rack. We also are looking at additional nodes to give more space for customers.
We're very excited to continue the partnership we have with this community, and we're looking forward to continue offering services for people to express their own creativity and personality.
All the best,
Kaisa
